So, you think you want a bulldog?  This is a breed that should be thoroughly researched. The bulldog is a man-made breed that can be susceptible to many health problems.  It's very important to educate yourself on the breed and common health issues that can affect them.

My goal on this page isn't to discourage, but to inform.  After having bullies, I know this is the only breed I will ever own.  It's a common misconception that they're not very smart; I've found quite the opposite to be true.  My bullies are constantly surprising me with just how much they do think..and any breed that possesses the sense of humor that the average bulldog has CAN'T be dumb!!  Stubborn..yes..selective hearing... definitely...but dumb?? No way!

Try being in a bad mood around a bulldog- it's nearly impossible...and they seem to know when you need a cuddle or if they need to make you smile.  They make great foot warmers and are very loyal.  Evil toe-biting spiders beware! Prepare to be amazed by their stealth and cunning moves in subduing any arachnid that dares cross the path of a bulldog.  As you can plainly see, the pros of having a bully companion are extensive- but there are also some drawbacks.

The physical characteristics of the breed that make them so endearing such as the flat nose, broad shoulders, wrinkles and small hips are also partially to blame for a lot of their health issues. If your pocketbook can't afford to take an occasional beating, then please do not consider a bully.  There are decent breeders out there who are truly trying to improve on the breed, but with that being said, there are also many who are trying to profit from them with little or no attention to carefully planned breedings with health and temperment being the most important concerns.

Any good breeder knows there's little to no money to be made when breeding is done the right way. Often it's a losing proposition where money is concerned. Breeding should ONLY be done by those who have the animals' best interests at heart and who have put the time into doing it the right way and for the right reasons.  When looking for a breeder don't be afraid to ask questions and plenty of them!  A good breeder will always take the time to answer any and all concerns you may have to the best of their ability.  If they can't take the time for you, how can they be taking the proper amount of time to ensure a happy, healthy puppy?  If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut!

The internet is a wealth of information- use search engines to help find anything and everything about the bulldog. It's also a good idea to read up on breed standards. Study and become familiar with the standards so you can easily recognize a dog that may not be "correct".
